Uses For Wax: The Wonders of Wax

So many purposes, it will melt your mind!

More Than Just Candles.

There is such a wide variety of ways to use wax. From the polish on your shoes to the coating for your cheese, wax serves so many purposes. Along with multiple purposes, there are also multiple types of wax depending on what its final outcome will be. For candle making, paraffin wax or beeswax are commonly used, but there is a laundry list of other types of waxes that are arguably even more useful.

Which Wax Works?

A fun alliteration for sure, but which wax works for what?

Well, for the Middle Ages, sealing wax worked best to close and secure important documents and letters. Glide waxes and grip waxes are applied to surfboards, skis, and snowboards to minimize or create friction for enhanced performance, while colored wax works best in manufacturing cosmetics, like mascara and lipstick. Works of art can also be created with colored wax as a medium in encaustic art. And we certainly wouldn't want to overlook the other great purpose of colored wax- making crayons.

With So Many Purposes, Who Wouldn't Want To Explore More?

Who knew learning about wax could be so fun and interesting.... I DID! That is why I made our home school lesson plan about it. This unit included so many unique learning activities and crafts, I didn't want the week to end. From the field trip to dip candles, to the hilariously adorable wax museum presentation, I loved every drip of our wax unit, and so will you!

There is more than just candles when it comes to wax and we covered it all- the history, its purposes, and most importantly why the crayons quit (from a fun read aloud)!
