Layers Of Goodness!
Layers Of Learning!
It's a fun way we spark our homeschool learning each week- a themed kitchen creation. While there's been times, I confess, that I have considered cutting corners and not including time spent creating in the kitchen, I am always glad that I kept this bit of learning going in all our years of homeschooling.
Why?
There's so many layers to learning, where inspiration and interests take hold, you just never know when a lesson is going to resonate and ignite your child. Though it may look like a simple kitchen craft at the surface, I know that hands-on activities and fun is where learning thrives.
Throughout our time cooking, baking, and crafting in the kitchen, we have furthered our understanding of different cultures, history, and traditions- not to mention the classic measuring, weighing, time, and fine motor skills practiced.
So our Geology lesson plan was certainly going to included some type of food creation, whether big or small. When researching our topic and preparing to dig into the planning, I came upon some vital information for geologists- the soil layers.
Soil layers give great insight to geologists, that explain aspects and processes of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere. To a geologist, the soil is a giant piece of the puzzle to understanding our Earth.
With this, my kitchen creation found its focus. We would replicate the soil layers, in the most delightful way...Soil Layer Lasagna! I prepared our ingredients, along with a paired worksheet, and gathered my kiddos to the kitchen.
What better way to learn about the soil layers than to replicate them with food!
That's my sediments anyway.
