Homemade Ice Cream: Ice Cream in a Bag

Updated: Jun 23

Get the scoop on how to have fun making your own homemade ice cream in a bag!

Serving Up Fun!

Making ice cream in a bag is the ever popular activity to do with young kids lately, and for good reason. I mean who doesn't love the sweet cool treat and a way to show your kids something new. Knowing this, I just had to create a thematic unit for our homeschool studies all about the delicious cream, and making our own was just the tip of the "ice"-berg. I packed a gallon of information, learning activities, and kitchen creations into our lesson while letting the ice cream theme melt into our core subjects. The week was as fun as it was delicious.

So Grab Those Bags and Let's Start Mixing!

What's Needed:

2 large zip close baggies

1 pint of heavy whipping cream

1 Tbsp. powdered sugar

2 Tsp. of vanilla

3 Tbsp. of pureed fruit (optional)

Ice

Salt

Any toppings desired

Directions:

  1. Start by doubling up two baggies. Place one baggie inside of another because it will leak.

  2. Load in the whipping cream, powdered sugar, vanilla, and fruit (optional) into the baggie. Zip both baggies closed.

  3. Fill another baggie with ice and 1/2 cup of salt.

  4. Place the doubled up baggie with the ingredients, inside the ice baggie and zip it closed.

  5. Shake it up!.. A lot! What most won't tell you is that the process does take a while to set up to the point of being able to scoop the ice cream out, but don't get discouraged- it really will make ice cream.

  6. Once ready, scoop it out into a cup or cone and add desired toppings.

Don't Melt Away Just Yet!

There's always room for seconds.

This treat is paired with the rest of my ice cream lesson plan.
