A Treat With Sparkle!
FIZZ,
SWOOSH,
KABOOM!
The sounds heard from fireworks alone are impressive, but add in the flittering and colorful displays in the sky and you've got something spectacular!
Fireworks are captivating for all ages, so why not make a whole fireworks lesson plan?
Well, at least that's where my mind was at! Being as how we are a homeschool family, I knew that a lesson themed upon fireworks was packed with awesome learning- from the history of the invention, to how they have evolved over time, and certainly the reason for them in our country's annual celebration.
POP!
A fireworks unit was about to light up our learning, and I couldn't wait to set it off! To keep my young learners engaged, and to create an immersive lesson each week, I love to involve them in some type of kitchen creation. From very early ages, my kids loved to be active and hands-on in the kitchen. They absolutely love to bake and create new recipes, so to keep that interest alive, I include a type of kitchen activity, however big or small.
Keeping with that, I wanted to attempt a kind of fireworks themed treat, that was simple and fun to create, and made their taste buds POP with joy. What lit up my mind was something we came to call "Sweet Sparkler Sticks".
This kitchen creation had them working their fine motor skills and creating unique treats,
which together made for a stunning display!
So gather up your little ones to make this fun and festive treat.

Silver Sanding Sprinkles
Gold Sanding Sprinkles
Mini Marshmallows
Parchment Paper

Graham Crackers
Cups

Let's Make It:
Step 1: Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2: Insert a mini marshmallow onto the end of a Pocky stick.
Step 3: Heat the colored candy melts of your choice in separate microwaveable bowls.
Step 4: Lay the Pocky stick with the marshmallow end on the prepared baking sheet. Fill a piping bag or baggie (with snipped corner) with the melted candy.
Step 5: Pipe/squeeze the candy melts over the mini mallow to give the sparkler a base, then pipe the melted candy outward from the marshmallow center to create the flares of the firework.
Step 6: While the candy is still melted, sprinkle on the sanding sprinkles. Place the baking sheet in the freezer until the candy has set/hardened. Once set, remove the sparkler from the parchment paper.
Step 7: Repeat steps 4-6 to create multiple colors and shapes of sparkler sticks.
ENJOY!
*As an optional display, wrap a glass or cup with aluminum foil and fill it with crushed graham crackers. Insert the sparkler sticks into the graham crackers to feature your stunning creations.
